Tim Maleeny Books in Order

Tim Maleeny grew up in New Jersey, the second son of an organic chemist and a registered nurse. He has described a childhood surrounded by books, with shelves crowded by pulp adventures, old mysteries, science fiction, and whatever else he could get his hands on. Long before he published a crime novel, he was learning that suspense could be tense, funny, and a little unruly all at once.

Books were part of the furniture.

He studied computer science at Dartmouth College, later attended Columbia Business School, and built a career in advertising. That background helps explain some of the snap in his fiction. He knows how to set a scene fast, keep a plot moving, and land a line cleanly. But while he was working in that world, fiction kept tugging at him.

A big change came after he moved to San Francisco and lived near Chinatown. The city's noir history, steep streets, and crowded local tensions gave him a setting that felt alive on the page. He started writing crime fiction there, first in short form. When his darkly funny story Till Death Do Us Part won the Macavity Award, it gave him the confidence to stop circling the idea of a novel and actually finish one.

That novel was Stealing the Dragon, which introduced Cape Weathers, an ex-reporter turned private investigator in San Francisco. The book throws Cape into a case involving smugglers, refugees, Triads, and a missing woman named Sally, and it set the tone for what followed. In Beating the Babushka and Greasing the Piñata, Maleeny kept the action sharp and the humor dry, sending Cape through the film business, political trouble, and cartel country without losing the human stakes.

Sally changes everything.

She is one reason the Cape books never settle into routine. Cape may be the wisecracking investigator, but Sally brings danger, discipline, and a very different moral temperature to the page. Maleeny also knows when to change gears. Jump turns a dead landlord and a building full of suspects into a comic murder puzzle, while later Cape novels like Boxing the Octopus and Hanging the Devil widen the canvas with corporate conspiracies, art theft, and the hidden economies of San Francisco's underworld. Readers tend to come for the pace and stay for the oddballs, the dialogue, and the way chaos keeps rubbing up against decency.

Across his work, certain things keep coming back. He likes outsiders who cannot stop poking at the truth, city streets that look one way in daylight and another after dark, and plots that move like capers but land like mysteries. His short fiction appears in major anthologies as well, and it carries the same mix of tension and mischief in a tighter frame.

Maleeny now lives in New York City with his wife Kathryn and their daughters, Clare and Helen. When he is not happily disappearing into research on exotic poisons, famous art heists, or deadly sea creatures, he is at work on the next story. It is an on-brand set of interests for a writer who likes trouble, but likes surprise even more.
