Author bio
Tim LaHaye was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1926, and grew up there as the country moved from the Depression into World War II. When he was nine, his father died suddenly, and LaHaye later described that loss as one of the moments that made faith and eternity feel personal. As a teenager he was already preaching and talking about Scripture with the kind of certainty that would define his adult life.
In 1944 he joined the Army Air Forces and served as a machine gunner on bombers in Europe. After the war he went back to school, earning a bachelor’s degree from Bob Jones University. He married Beverly Ratcliffe in the late 1940s, and the two stayed closely linked in ministry, writing, and public advocacy for decades.
LaHaye eventually made San Diego his home. He became the longtime pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church and led the congregation for about 25 years. In the early 1970s he helped launch Christian Heritage College, a school that later became San Diego Christian College. Over time he stepped away from the day-to-day demands of the pulpit to focus more on writing, teaching, and organizing.
A lot of his nonfiction reads like practical counsel you might hear from a steady, opinionated pastor. He wrote about marriage, communication, and family life in plain, directive language, and he co-wrote The Act of Marriage, a frank guide to intimacy within a Christian framework. Readers come to these books for straightforward advice, not theory.
He also had a second lane: personality and self-understanding. In Transforming Your Temperament he used the classic “four temperaments” idea to help readers name their strengths and weak spots, then pushed toward change through spiritual disciplines, healthier relationships, and more self-awareness.
Then he turned those teaching instincts toward Bible prophecy.
LaHaye wrote extensively about the end times from a premillennial, pre-tribulation perspective. In Perhaps Today and related prophecy books, he walked readers through passages in Daniel and Revelation, laid out timelines, and tried to answer the practical question underneath it all, “What do I do with this?” His approach favored charts, definitions, and clear assertions over ambiguity.
He was also politically active. LaHaye helped found and support conservative Christian networks, including the Council for National Policy, and he spoke bluntly about social issues. Those public stances, along with some of his published claims, drew strong criticism as well as loyal supporters, and they shaped how different audiences read everything he wrote.
Most readers know him for Left Behind.
Working with Jerry B. Jenkins, LaHaye helped shape an end-times thriller series that starts with the sudden disappearance of millions of people and follows new believers like Rayford Steele and journalist Buck Williams as the world reorganizes under a charismatic global leader. The books sold tens of millions of copies, spawned prequels and spinoffs for younger readers, and led to multiple screen adaptations. In later years he kept branching out into fiction, including the archaeology-and-conspiracy suspense of Babylon Rising. LaHaye died in San Diego in 2016, but his mix of pastoral advice, prophecy teaching, and high-concept storytelling is still what brings new readers to his shelf.
