Thomas Mogford Books in Order

Thomas Mogford was born and grew up in Oxford, a city that stayed important to him long after he left for university. He studied Modern Languages at St Catherine's College, Oxford, graduating with first-class honours in 2000. French and Italian literature were the parts of the course that pulled him most strongly toward books. The city gave him cafés, libraries, and the habit of looking closely at the place around him.

At first, the route to publishing was not direct. Mogford took a job at ITV, where his interest in languages led to work connected with football coverage and trips to Japan and Germany for FIFA World Cups. He also worked as a journalist and translator, with bylines in Time Out and the Guardian, and translation work for the UEFA Champions League and the European Parliament.

All the while, he was trying to write novels. The early ones did not find a publisher, but they gave him practice and convinced him he wanted to keep going.

It was a long apprenticeship, with plenty of rejection.

Then he changed direction again, beginning postgraduate law study at City University in London.

The law course brought a useful break. While considering whether he might practise in Gibraltar, Mogford visited the territory and began thinking about the kind of lawyer who could move through its tight-knit, multilingual community. He found a literary agent during that period, put the law studies on hold, and published Shadow of the Rock in 2012.

That book introduced Somerset, or Spike, Sanguinetti, a Gibraltar-based lawyer whose cases pull him into the uneasy connections between law, family, money and politics around the Mediterranean. Sign of the Cross moves the action to Malta, while Hollow Mountain brings danger back to Gibraltar. In Sleeping Dogs, Spike travels to Corfu and Albania, and A Thousand Cuts looks at a wartime crime that still casts a shadow over the Rock. Readers who like crime stories rooted in a real place will find coastal cities, border crossings, old loyalties and cases that rarely stay simple.

The series has been a major strand of his work, but not the only one. Mogford also writes historical fiction as T.L. Mogford. His 2022 novel The Plant Hunter follows an ambitious nineteenth-century plant collector on a risky journey through China. It was shortlisted for the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize. The change of period suits an author drawn to travel, research, and people forced to make difficult choices far from home.

His first Spike novel was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Dagger for Best Debut Novel. That was a useful signal that the experiment had landed.

Mogford lives in London with his family. He has said that writing ideas can turn up anywhere, so he keeps half an eye and ear open for them. It fits his fiction: the trouble often begins in an ordinary conversation, then follows somebody across a border.
