Series background & context

The This Poison Heart books follow Briseis, usually called Bri, a teen girl with a gift that is beautiful right up until it turns dangerous. With a touch, she can coax plants to grow. That sounds almost gentle at first. Bayron quickly shows that it is anything but simple. Bri's power is tied to inheritance, old knowledge, and a family history that reaches much further than she realized.

The series begins when Bri and her parents leave Brooklyn for the summer after Bri inherits a crumbling estate in rural New York. Instead of giving her a calm escape, the house opens the door to a stranger and older world. There is a walled garden full of deadly plants, an apothecary, a set of instructions only certain members of her family can use, and a steady stream of people who seem to know more about the property than Bri does.

The house is part inheritance story, part locked-garden mystery.

What makes the series work is the way Bayron balances lush fantasy with real unease. The garden is gorgeous, but it is also a threat. The family legacy is empowering, but it comes with expectations and secrets. Bri is not just learning what she can do. She is trying to figure out what other people want from her, what they already know, and whether this strange inheritance is a gift, a burden, or both.

Bayron also brings in Greek myth without losing the modern feel of the story. The first book stays close to the estate and the slow reveal of Bri's family magic. The second, This Wicked Fate, widens the scale. Bri gets one chance to save her mother, and that sends her after the last fragment of the Absyrtus Heart. To do it, she has to meet relatives she never knew, learn more about the powers running through her bloodline, and step into a much bigger fight than the one she started with.

This is lush fantasy with dirt under its nails.

Readers should expect a mix of creeping atmosphere, family drama, romance, and magic that can heal or harm depending on how it is used. Bayron is interested in beauty, but she is just as interested in what beauty can hide. Across both books, the larger question is not only whether Bri can control her power. It is whether she can choose her own way of carrying it. If you like contemporary fantasy with Gothic edges, dangerous gardens, old houses, and heroines who have to grow into frightening gifts, this series has a lot to offer.
