What makes the series work is the mix of moody paranormal atmosphere and very direct teen feeling. Ridley is not just reacting to vampire lore. She is also wrestling with first love, choice, fear, and the fact that wanting one person can unravel every plan you had for yourself.

If you want M Leighton in full YA paranormal mode, this is the clearest entry point. Read the books in order. The story is built like one long escalation, and the later choices land much harder when you have watched Ridley and Bo get there step by step.
