The Thieves of Shadow series opens with Children of the Fox and starts with a classic impossible-job setup. The setting does a lot of heavy lifting here. These books take place in Ayreth, a fantasy world where enchantments are part of everyday life and power sits with sorcerers, rulers, and people working in the shadows between them. Old legends and hidden history sit just under the surface of everything. The story moves through crowded streets, hidden safehouses, libraries, strongholds, underwater dangers, and finally a prison that is supposed to be impossible to enter or leave.

Expect twists.

What makes the trilogy stick is the balance between clever plotting and character pressure. The cons are sharp, the pacing is quick, and the plans often turn at the last possible second. But the emotional pull comes from watching Callan and the others decide whether trust is worth the cost.
