Author bio

Theresa TR Ragan was born in Walnut Creek, California, and grew up in nearby Lafayette in a lively family with four sisters. Before writing full time, she worked as a legal secretary for a large corporation, a day job that paid the bills while stories kept tugging at her from the side.

Writing didn't arrive quickly.

When she was pregnant with her fourth child, she read A Knight in Shining Armor and felt a switch flip. She wanted to write the kind of book that could pull a reader out of real life for a few hours. She started researching medieval history at the library, writing late at night and in school parking lots, and over the next five years she finished Return of the Rose.

That first novel did not sail straight into print. Ragan kept writing for about two decades, collecting rejections and six Golden Heart nominations along the way. In 2011 she decided to self-publish, and that long apprenticeship finally started to pay off.

The book that changed things was Abducted, the first Lizzy Gardner thriller. Readers connected with its survivor turned investigator heroine and the hard-driving mix of danger, grit, and emotion, and Ragan soon followed it with Dead Weight, A Dark Mind, Obsessed, Almost Dead, and Evil Never Dies. She has since sold millions of books and landed on major bestseller lists, but the appeal of her work is still pretty down to earth: fast plots, personal stakes, and women who refuse to stay broken.

She also never stayed in one genre for long.

As T.R. Ragan, she built more suspense series around wounded, determined leads, including Faith McMann in Furious, Jessie Cole in Her Last Day, and Sawyer Brooks in Don't Make a Sound. Those books often return to the same pressure points: missing people, buried family secrets, revenge, mothers and daughters, sisters, and the long aftershocks of violence. Even the standalones, like Count to Three and Such a Beautiful Family, lean into ordinary lives pushed into frightening situations.

But thrillers are only part of the picture. Under Theresa Ragan, she has also written time-travel romance, romantic suspense, and contemporary romance, including A Knight in Central Park, Finding Kate Huntley, Taming Mad Max, and Having My Baby. Across all of it, whether she is sending a heroine back to medieval England or dropping a reporter into a murder case, she likes stories with momentum, strong feelings, and people who have to fight their way toward a better life.

She still lives in Sacramento, California, with her husband Joe, and travel remains part of her life too. On her own site she mentions trips to Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, China, Thailand, and Nepal, plus a run-in with a killer elephant that sounds like something out of one of her books. That mix of family life, persistence, and just enough chaos feels about right for a writer who spent years plugging away before readers finally found her in a big way.
