Series background & context

The Faith McMann books, Furious, Outrage, and Wrath, are one long story told across three novels. This is not a series where each book resets the board. It begins with a nightmare. Faith comes home to find her husband murdered, her children taken, and herself left for dead. From that point on, everything in the trilogy is driven by one question: how far will a mother go to get her children back?

At the start, Faith is not a detective or a trained action hero. She is a wife, a mother, and a teacher whose life has been ripped apart in a single violent attack. What makes the series work is watching that ordinary life burn away and something much harder take its place. She stops waiting for the law to fix things. Instead, she goes looking for the people who stole her family.

It gets dark fast.

The trilogy is set around Sacramento and the criminal world connected to human trafficking and modern slavery. Faith moves deeper and deeper into that underworld as the books go on, trying to rescue her children while staying alive long enough to do it. She is not alone. Family members step in, and so do two unlikely allies called Beast and Rage, characters who help give the series some of its rough, almost feverish energy. Together they push through ambushes, escapes, revenge strikes, and desperate searches that rarely let the tension drop for long.

What keeps the books from being just nonstop chase scenes is the emotional cost. Faith is grieving, furious, and running on instinct for much of the trilogy. She wants justice, but she also wants revenge, and those are not always the same thing. The deeper she goes, the more the series asks what fighting monsters does to the person doing the fighting. By Wrath, the stakes are not only whether the children can be found, but what shape Faith and her family will be in if they are.

Read it in order or not at all.

Tonally, this is one of Ragan's harshest and most relentless series. It is high-stakes, deeply personal, and powered by anger as much as suspense. If you want a thriller arc that keeps climbing without much room to breathe, and you do not mind a story willing to stare straight at ugly material, the Faith McMann trilogy is the one to pick. It is about motherhood, survival, loyalty, and the frightening power of refusing to quit.
