In 1985 Providence, a private jet carrying four partners at a mafia linked law firm explodes, leaving their four very different widows with more questions than grief. As debts, missing cash, and a relentless enforcer close in, the women must join forces to uncover what their partners were hiding.

Series background & context

The Widows is a shared world crime series set in mid 1980s Providence, Rhode Island, created by four thriller writers who each inhabit a different heroine. It begins with a private jet crash that kills the partners of a mafia connected law firm and leaves behind four very different women who suddenly have to fend for themselves.

Justine is a former fashion model trying to adjust to quiet suburban life. Camille is the glamorous second wife people whisper about. Krystle is the loyal matriarch who sees the family firm as her sons' future. Meredith is a stripper who had a secret relationship with the firm's only female partner. The books follow what happens when grief, money, and danger force these women into the same room.

In Young Rich Widows, the crash is only the start of their troubles. A gangster insists the dead lawyers owed him a small fortune, and the widows learn there was a large sum of cash on the plane that never turned up. Chased by a ruthless enforcer and hemmed in by police attention, they dig into their late partners' files and late night habits, uncovering mob ties, betrayals, and a conspiracy that stretches far beyond Providence.

Two years later in Desperate Deadly Widows, the women are still paying for the choices they made. Krystle is fighting to keep the battered law firm alive, Justine is grinding through law school, Meredith now runs the strip club where she once danced, and Camille stages honey trap stings for wronged wives. When the city's hard partying mayor dies after drinking champagne at Meredith's club, the scandal lands squarely on their doorstep.

As Meredith is hauled into custody and the media turns the case into a circus, the widows have to close ranks again. Their search for the truth pushes them through back rooms and boardrooms, from neon lit nightclubs to smoky offices where old men still pull the strings. Loyalties crack, secrets spill, and the question of whom to trust becomes as urgent as solving the crime.

Across the series, the tone stays quick and punchy. Chapters often alternate between the four widows, each voice handled by a different author, so readers get a rotating view of the same tangled mess. The stories revel in 1980s details, from hairspray and shoulder pads to cassette soundtracks, while still digging into timeless themes like friendship, power, and how far someone will go to protect their family.

Readers who start with the first book will see the women's relationships deepen and fray over time, but each installment lays out a self contained mystery with its own caper like climax. If you like ensemble casts, female driven mob stories, and thrillers that balance genuine stakes with a sense of fun, The Widows offers a vivid, bingeable ride.
