Author bio
Kimberly Belle grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the daughter of a chemist and a speech pathologist. Books and stories were a constant in her house, but it took her a while to find her way to writing them full time.
After high school she headed to Agnes Scott College in Georgia, where she earned a BA and soaked up Atlanta's energy. There she met a Dutch boyfriend, and after graduation she followed him to the Netherlands for what was supposed to be a short adventure.
That six month plan stretched into more than a decade. Belle built a life in Amsterdam, learned the language, and worked in marketing and fundraising for nonprofits, including organizations focused on housing and social services. Both of her children were born there, and the city became a second home.
The financial crisis of 2008 changed everything.
When the economy dipped, her job disappeared, and with it went the excuse to keep putting off the novel she had always imagined writing. Belle threw herself into learning craft, taking classes, trading pages with critique partners, and slowly turning an idea about a family tragedy into what became The Last Breath.
Published in 2014, The Last Breath introduced readers to her brand of suspense, where long buried secrets collide with complicated family loyalties. She followed it with The Ones We Trust, a story about a disgraced journalist, military cover ups, and the cost of telling the truth.
Then came The Marriage Lie, and her career shifted gears.
That novel about a woman who discovers her seemingly perfect husband died on a flight he was never meant to be on climbed bestseller lists in the United States and abroad, reached the semifinals of the Goodreads Choice Awards for mystery and thriller, and was translated into numerous languages. With books like Three Days Missing, Dear Wife, Stranger in the Lake, My Darling Husband, and The Personal Assistant, she has become known for domestic thrillers that put ordinary families under extraordinary pressure.
In recent years Belle has taken her readers farther afield. The Paris Widow sends an Atlanta caterer racing through Paris after an explosion and a missing husband, while The Expat Affair draws on Belle's years in Amsterdam to spin a story about diamonds, murder, and the uneasy life of an American abroad. She also co created Young Rich Widows and its follow ups, a multi author series set in 1980s Providence that mixes mob intrigue, big hair, and female friendship.
Away from the page, Belle divides her time between Atlanta and Amsterdam, traveling regularly between her two favorite cities. She is one of the three hosts behind the Killer Author Club, a bi monthly live show and podcast where she talks crime fiction, cocktails, and the writing life with other suspense authors. Whether she is writing about missing children, dangerous marriages, or widows in trouble, she keeps circling the same questions that first pushed her to the blank page: how well do we really know the people we love, and what happens when the lies finally surface.
