Series background & context

The DI Gus McGuire novels are gritty police procedurals rooted in Bradford, where the city’s terraced streets, diverse communities and hidden corners feel as vivid as any character on the page. At the heart of the series is Gus himself, a driven detective inspector who is as stubbornly committed to his team as he is haunted by past trauma.

When readers first meet him in Unquiet Souls, Gus is returning to work after being stabbed on duty and watching a boy die in front of him. He is separated from his wife, wrestling with panic and guilt, and trying to prove to himself and his bosses that he still belongs in the job. Around him, a close-knit unit forms, including sharp DS Alice Cooper, tech specialist John “Compo” Compton and dependable Taffy, whose banter lightens some very dark material.

The early books plunge the team into cases that expose the worst of organised crime. Unquiet Souls tackles child trafficking and a predator known only as the Matchmaker, while Uncoiled Lies drags them into a brutal turf war involving local drug dealers, vulnerable sex workers and a new Polish gang pushing into Bradford. In Untainted Blood, a slick far right politician and a racist serial killer force Gus to confront how hatred and ambition feed off each other on the streets he polices.

As the series develops, the investigations grow more tangled and the personal stakes climb. Uncommon Cruelty ties a missing teen to violent bikers, a Muslim youth group and a fundamentalist American church, all while old cases come back to threaten Gus and Alice. In Unspoken Truths, a sabotaged train, a tortured woman and a missing brother-in-law stretch the team from Bradford to Manchester, Saddleworth Moor and even Northern Cyprus, with the dark web and bioweapon research in the mix.

Technology and online spaces become even more central in Unseen Evil, where a murderer uses Snapchat and other platforms to broadcast killings of young people, just as a stalker closes in on Gus himself. Unbound Ties pulls the focus back to his own family history when a pregnant woman’s murder and a series of nursery rhyme clues lead straight to his mother’s childhood in Scottish foster care.

By the time readers reach Unjust Bias, the eighth book, the series is openly wrestling with issues of sexuality, gender identity and bigotry. A murdered homeless boy, a missing teen, a so-called “normalisation” group and a slave auction site on the dark web all collide, forcing Gus and his team to protect vulnerable teenagers while challenging the prejudices that put them in danger.

Across the books you can expect intricate investigations, a strong sense of place, ongoing character arcs and cases that never shy away from difficult subjects. The throughline is Gus’s determination to fight back against the worst kinds of cruelty without losing his empathy along the way.
