The Warwycks (Barbara Ovstedal) Books in Order

The Warwycks is a three-book historical family saga by Barbara Ovstedal, best known under the name Rosalind Laker. The novels follow the fortunes of the Warwycks and the people pulled into their orbit, beginning in Regency England and moving into a more industrial, Victorian-era Sussex. The opening novel, Warwyck's Wife, also published as Warwyck's Woman, introduces Daniel Warwyck, a gentleman prizefighter with an inheritance to secure and a fierce need to control his future. The second book, Claudine's Daughter, shifts attention to Lucy di Castelloni. Raised in Italy, Lucy comes to Easthampton hoping to understand her mother and find a place for herself. Instead, she finds a community that remembers old wounds far more clearly than it welcomes outsiders. Her arrival brings questions of family, legitimacy, and scandal back into the open, showing how completely the past still governs the present.

By The Warwycks of Easthampton, also published as Warwyck's Choice, the younger generation is carrying the story. Tom Warwyck and Nicolette Radcliffe fall in love while their families remain divided by a longstanding feud. Shipbuilding, money, inheritance, and the pressure of a famous local name all raise the stakes. Tom wants to choose his own direction, but Easthampton has a way of making private choices public.

Nobody gets to start with a clean slate.

The tone is romantic and dramatic, with the extra pull of a family chronicle. There are difficult marriages, rival households, secrets with long afterlives, and people trying to use business or marriage to gain security. The books also make room for the changing social world around their characters, from class tensions and land ownership to the growth of industry and the pressures of respectability.

Read the trilogy in publication order. Starting with Daniel and Kate gives the later conflicts their full weight, and Lucy's story makes more sense once the first generation's choices are clear. By the final book, the town itself feels almost like another member of the cast, shaped by the Warwycks' hopes, mistakes, and stubborn old grudges.
