Series background & context

The Vassi Contact is Michelle Howard at her most openly apocalyptic. These books begin in 2130, when a spreading infection turns the familiar world into a nightmare and survival becomes the first concern for almost everyone still alive.

But this is not just a zombie-outbreak series.

Howard folds alien contact into the collapse, which gives the books a bigger scope than simple end-of-the-world suspense. As Darkness Spreads moves between multiple viewpoints, including Aspen and Captain John on the human side, and Venik and Dawn on the alien-human collision course that pushes the series into something stranger and larger.

That ensemble feel matters. The danger is too big for one couple alone, so the romance has to grow inside a group effort to survive, protect loved ones, and make sense of what caused the disaster in the first place. There is fear, movement, and a constant sense that the next safe place may not stay safe for long.

As Dawn Rises narrows the focus and follows Dawn after rescue, once Earth is behind her and she wakes in a world she never chose. That shift lets the series do something fun, it turns survival stress into culture-clash romance, with Dawn and Venik forced to figure out whether protection is the same thing as control.

If you like your sci-fi romance with infection horror, battered survivors, and aliens who arrive at exactly the wrong time, The Vassi Contact is the series to try. It is tense, fast, and more openly perilous than most of Howard's other worlds.
