Series background & context

The Untouchables is one of Darcy Burke's biggest and most recognisable Regency worlds. The premise is simple and strong: Society's most eligible, elusive bachelor peers keep meeting the women who can finally unsettle them. Some of those women are bluestockings, some are wallflowers, some are outcasts, and some are simply too perceptive to be impressed by rank alone.

That combination carries the whole series.

These books are rich in aristocratic glamour, but they are not only about titles and status. Burke uses the social power of dukes and earls as pressure, then puts them opposite women who have their own grievances, intelligence, and limits. The best moments usually come when a hero who has always moved easily through the world discovers that charm, money, or inherited position will not solve the emotional problem in front of him.

Because the series is long, it develops a strong sense of continuity. Families overlap. Friends appear again. Earlier couples echo into later books. That makes it especially satisfying for readers who like to settle into a world and stay there a while. You can read a single book for the romance, but reading in order gives the friendships and rivalries more weight.

The tone is polished and emotional. There is wit, attraction, and plenty of ballroom sparkle, but also room for loneliness, regret, damaged reputations, and hard-earned trust. Burke is interested in the way high status can protect people and isolate them at the same time, and this series gives her a lot of room to play with that idea.

If you want the broadest doorway into Burke's historical work, this is it. Start with The Bachelor Earl if you like a prequel, or jump into The Forbidden Duke and keep going from there. Readers who enjoy long connected Regency series with strong character payoffs will feel at home very quickly.
