The Tour

by Jean Grainger

2013

Irish tour guide Conor O'Shea expects another routine week shepherding American tourists around the country. Instead, a banker, a serial divorcee, a lonely cop and an elderly woman with a secret force him to confront heartbreak, second chances and his own past.

Series background & context

The Tour series follows Conor O'Shea, a charming Irish tour guide whose work puts him right in the middle of other people's turning points. At first he is simply driving a coach full of American visitors along the high roads and back roads of Ireland, but each trip ends up changing far more than anyone expects.

In The Tour a mismatched group of tourists arrive with their own secrets, hopes and disappointments. Conor expects another routine week on the road, pointing out ruins, telling jokes and keeping the peace. Instead he becomes a quiet witness to marriages in trouble, second chances at love and an elderly passenger with a past that alters everything.

Later books widen the frame. In Safe at the Edge of the World a couple on the run from a mob boss try to disappear into one of Conor's itineraries, bringing danger onto a supposedly relaxing holiday. The Story of Grenville King and The Homecoming of Bubbles O'Leary move much of the action to Castle Dysert on the County Clare coast, where Conor takes on the challenge of restoring a crumbling estate and using it as a base for his tours.

Castle Dysert lets the series mix contemporary life with echoes of older stories. As Conor renovates the building and welcomes guests, he uncovers the history of the family who once lived there and realises that the old secrets woven into its walls mirror problems his visitors are facing now. The castle becomes almost a character in its own right, a place where past and present meet.

Later novels such as Finding Billie Romano and Kayla's Trick push Conor into even stranger situations, from helping a young woman untangle a DNA surprise to hosting a chaotic reality show about tracing Irish roots. Through it all he remains a fixer, the person other people confide in when life no longer fits the script.

Across the series you can expect modern Ireland in all its variety, from city streets and country pubs to windswept coastlines. The tone is warm and hopeful, with plenty of humour, music and food, but the books do not shy away from grief, regret or the complicated ties of family. If you like character driven stories where travel, friendship and second chances are at the heart of things, The Tour series is a welcoming place to start.
