Letters of Freedom

by Jean Grainger

2016

Forty year old Carmel Sheehan, abandoned at birth and raised in a convent, is stuck in a loveless rural marriage. A message from a stranger claiming to know the truth about her past sends her on an emotional journey through hidden family history that could finally free her, or break her heart.

Series background & context

The Carmel Sheehan books centre on a woman who has never quite belonged to herself. Abandoned as a newborn at a Dublin convent and raised by nuns, Carmel grows up believing she is the product of sin and scandal, and that her past is something to be ashamed of rather than explored.

When the first book, Letters of Freedom, opens, she is about forty and living in rural Ireland, trapped in a marriage to Bill Sheehan that offers security but little kindness. Life is narrow, predictable and lonely. Then a stranger sends her a message online claiming to know things about her birth that the convent never revealed. Replying means risking the only life she has, but ignoring it means staying in the dark.

As Carmel follows the trail laid out in those letters, she discovers that her story did not begin in the orphanage at all. The series moves between her present day search and the earlier generations whose choices shaped her fate. Love affairs, rigid moral codes and painful compromises in mid twentieth century Ireland slowly come into focus, forcing Carmel to rethink everything she was told about who she is.

In The Future's Not Ours To See she is offered a new start in London through the kindness of Dr Sharif Khan, a friend of her late birth mother. Leaving means scandal at home and the final end of her marriage, but it also offers work, friendship and a chance to imagine herself as something more than a discarded child or a dutiful wife.

By What Will Be Carmel has built a full life in London, with a career, a loving partner and friends who know nothing of convents or small town gossip. Yet Ireland still tugs at her, especially through her relationship with her devoted father. A family road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way pulls old wounds to the surface once more and shows her that running away is not the same as making peace.

Throughout the trilogy the tone is compassionate and grounded. The books look at adoption, secrecy, religious power and social shame without turning anyone into a simple villain. At heart this is the story of a woman learning to claim her own history, forgive where she can and step into a future she chooses for herself.
