Series background & context

The Team is Bauer’s college football series, set at a powerhouse Texas university where the stadium lights are bright, the expectations are punishing, and the players are trying to figure out who they are off the field. Across two novels, the series follows interconnected couples whose lives revolve around the same team.

The Jock starts with tight end Wes Van de Hoek, a ranch kid who has escaped his West Texas upbringing on a scholarship and is now a star player and team captain. He keeps his sexuality locked down, convinced there is no room for a gay man in big-time college football. During a summer study program in Paris, he shares an apartment with art student Justin Swanscott, and a tentative friendship turns into a sweeping first love.

Their romance plays out under the Eiffel Tower and along the Seine, but the real test comes back home. Once the season starts, Wes is under a microscope from coaches, media, and scouts, while Justin refuses to shrink himself or go back in the closet. The book leans into angst, missteps, and the slow work of deciding what kind of man Wes wants to be.

The Quarterback shifts the spotlight to Colton Hall, the team’s charismatic QB and Wes’s best friend, and Nick Swanscott, Justin’s devoted single dad. Colton is headed for the NFL until a devastating injury ends his season and potentially his career. He moves in with Nick to recover, and their caretaker-patient dynamic slowly morphs into a bi-awakening, age-gap romance that neither of them expected.

Where the first book is all young love and the fear of being outed, the second digs into burnout, life after a derailed dream, and what it means to start over in your forties. Both novels are filled with practices, games, and team traditions, but they are just as interested in late-night conversations in cramped apartments and family dinners around a kitchen table.

Taken together, The Team is about more than touchdowns. It is about men raised to believe toughness means silence, learning that vulnerability can be its own kind of strength. Readers who enjoy slow burns, big feelings, and sports as a backdrop rather than a rulebook will find plenty to sink into here.
