Series background & context

The Spitfire Girl books follow Ellie Simpson, a born flyer whose love of the sky becomes her way into wartime service. She is not a drawing-room heroine dropped into history for decoration. She is practical, brave, restless, and happiest when she is in the air.

That makes the series feel a little different from many home front romances. Flying is not just a detail here. The danger of takeoff, delivery work, damaged aircraft, and constant pressure gives the books real momentum. Ellie serves first as a young woman desperate to do her bit, and then as someone whose skill keeps carrying her into bigger risks.

Across the series, her emotional life grows alongside her professional one. Love matters, especially her relationship with Jack Reynolds, but so do friendship, family strain, loss, and the hard truth that useful people are often asked to give more and more.

The books move from the anxious early war years into a later stage where victory seems possible, yet nothing is simple. That shift helps the series keep fresh energy. Ellie changes with the war, and so do the stakes around her.

If you like wartime fiction with planes, purpose, and a heroine who earns every bit of her confidence, this is one of Miller's most direct and engaging series. Start at the beginning and let it climb.
