Series background & context

Barbara's War is one of Fenella J Miller's earlier wartime family sagas, and it leans into long-form change. Rather than focusing on a single short crisis, it follows young lives as war stretches on and keeps reshaping plans, loyalties, and love affairs.

Barbara Sinclair stands at the center of it. At the start, she is desperate to get away from home in Hastings just as the threat of bombing grows. That search for safety opens the door to new relatives, new choices, and new men who matter to her future. From there the books widen into a bigger picture of family, friendship, and the long emotional cost of the war years.

The series has a more continuous feel than some of Miller's later linked romances. Characters do not simply meet, fall in love, and step neatly offstage. Lives keep colliding across the books, and earlier choices continue to matter.

There is romance here, but there is also danger, upheaval, and the sense that no one gets through wartime unchanged. The mood is more intimate home front saga than military epic. It is about what happens to people who wait, worry, grow up fast, and try to hold on to hope.

If you like wartime fiction that stays close to one family and lets you live through the middle years, the setbacks, and the hard-earned resolutions with them, Barbara's War is worth reading in order.
