Series background & context
The Duke's Alliance books are connected by the extended Silchester family, and that family gives the series its real pull. Instead of one central couple, Fenella J Miller builds a web of siblings, cousins, guardians, house guests, and friends whose lives keep overlapping.
Silchester Court is the social center of the series, but the stories do not stay still. One book might begin with a house party, another with a threat from the hero's military past, another with a journey to Bath or a rescue in Spain. That variety helps the series feel bigger than a simple parade of marriage plots.
What the books share is a fondness for women who do not fit neatly into what society wants. Grace is being pushed into a false identity. Mary is a widow who values her independence. Madeline gets caught in danger she never asked for. Sofia, in the later story, is about as far from a conventional English bride as the series can get. Miller clearly enjoys watching the men fall for women who refuse to behave as expected.
There is also a mild adventure streak running through these novels. Assassins, disguises, dangerous journeys, compromised reputations, and wartime backstory all turn up, but the tone stays readable and romantic rather than dark.
If you want a Regency family series with recurring faces, a fair bit of movement, and heroines with minds of their own, The Duke's Alliance is a good place to settle in. It is best read in order, because the family bonds are half the fun.
