The Silver Ladies Do Lunch
by Judy Leigh
2023
Sixty years after leaving Miss Hamilton’s primary school class, friends Lin, Josie and Minnie are all facing upheaval, from bereavement to marital secrets and lonely success. When their ninety year old former teacher reappears in a purple mobility scooter, a series of long, talkative lunches helps each woman imagine a braver future.
Series background & context
The Silver Ladies series focuses on a small group of women who have known each other since primary school and are now facing the challenges and freedoms of later life together. Old teacher Cecily Hamilton, now in her nineties, and former pupils Lin, Josie and Minnie meet regularly to talk, eat and gently nudge each other toward braver choices.
Most of the action takes place in an English village inspired by the Oxfordshire community where Judy Leigh spent part of her own childhood. There are cosy cafés, familiar lanes and a sense that everyone’s history is woven into the place, which makes it the perfect backdrop for stories about memory, loyalty and starting over when you thought all the big decisions were behind you.
In The Silver Ladies Do Lunch the friends are unsettled in different ways. Josie is grieving the sudden loss of her husband, still unsure how to build a life around that absence. Lin is approaching her fiftieth wedding anniversary but cannot shake the feeling that her husband is hiding something from her. Minnie has poured her energy into an academic career in Oxford and sometimes wonders whether the price of that success has been too high.
Cecily glides back into their lives on a purple mobility scooter, bringing sharp opinions, humour and a determination that none of her former pupils will simply shrink into the background. Over shared lunches and small village dramas, the women begin to admit what they really want, support a much younger woman facing her own crossroads and test whether long standing friendships can stretch to fit new versions of themselves.
The Silver Ladies Seize the Day turns the spotlight onto Cecily herself. Months away from her ninety second birthday, she has built a contented life based around friends, routines and local outings. Then the granddaughter of her first love Eddie arrives at the door with startling news, insisting that Eddie has never forgotten Cecily and is still in love with her after all these years.
While Cecily weighs up whether she wants romance so late in life, the other Silver Ladies around her are falling head over heels for new partners and rediscovering old flames. Their stories show that change does not stop in your seventies or eighties, and that emotional risk can feel just as daunting, and rewarding, as it did in youth.
Taken together, the Silver Ladies novels are about friendship and courage as much as love. They celebrate women who have decades of experience behind them yet still choose to be open to surprise, whether that means inviting a neighbour to lunch, booking a spontaneous trip or answering a knock that might bring an old sweetheart back into their lives. The tone is gentle, funny and hopeful, with an emphasis on community, second chances and the idea that it is never too late to seize the day.
