Foul Play at Seal Bay
by Judy Leigh
2023
In the supposedly quiet season in Seal Bay, librarian and wild swimmer Morwenna Mutton finds a local businessman dying on the beach during her daughter’s engagement party. With her own family under suspicion, she throws herself into investigating the murder before the killer strikes again.
Series background & context
The Morwenna Mutton Mysteries follow a woman who should be enjoying a gentle life on the Cornish coast but keeps tripping over bodies instead. Morwenna Mutton is in her sixties, works part time in the local library and helps out in her daughter’s tearoom, yet she is far more interested in people than in shelving books.
She lives in the fictional seaside town of Seal Bay, a place of fishing boats, tidal beaches and tightly knit streets where everyone knows each other’s business. Morwenna swims in the sea all year round with her wild swimming group, cycles everywhere on an old bike and is surrounded by three generations of Mutton women who support and occasionally exasperate her.
In Foul Play at Seal Bay, the first book, a pushy local businessman who has been trying to buy up half the town is stabbed during an engagement party on the beach. Morwenna is the one who finds him and, with suspicion falling on her family and the café they run, she decides that waiting for the police to get it right is not an option.
Bloodshed on the Boards takes the action into the world of amateur dramatics when a travelling theatre company arrives and their director is found dead. Morwenna’s talent for apparently harmless questions makes her the perfect person to drift between rehearsals, the wild swimming club and the pubs, picking up gossip that might point to a killer.
In The Cream Tea Killer a local DJ and radio presenter, Irina, asks for Morwenna’s help but is found washed up on the beach before they can meet. Because Irina was a strong swimmer, Morwenna is sure this was no accident, and when the media labels the culprit “the Cream Tea Killer” the case suddenly feels close to home for a family that runs a tearoom.
Mince Pies and Murder brings a festive twist. As Christmas lights go up around Seal Bay, a prickly local author with a long list of enemies is found dead at a party, a mince pie and champagne glass still in his hands. Anonymous cards and unnerving sightings of someone in a Santa costume put Morwenna and her loved ones under pressure while she races to unmask the culprit before the holiday is ruined.
Across the series the murders are serious, but the tone stays on the cosy side. The books lean into community spirit, humour and family drama, with Morwenna’s courage and curiosity at the heart of each investigation. Readers can expect seaside scenery, Sunday swims that make you shiver just reading about them, a large and lively supporting cast and satisfying, puzzle style whodunnits that never forget the warmth of village life.
