Series background & context
The Silent Champions is Andy Peloquin's military fantasy series, and it knows exactly what it wants to be. The books follow Captain Aravon, a battle-scarred officer whose first dream of glory ends in disaster when barbarians slaughter his soldiers. From there, the series becomes a long, hard study in rebuilding, revenge, and command.
Aravon is the heart of it. He is capable, proud, and deeply marked by failure. That matters because these books are not about a chosen one winning clean victories. They are about a commander trying to keep people alive while carrying the memory of everyone he could not save.
The setting does a lot of work too.
The war against the Eirdkilr, towering barbarian invaders, gives the series its constant pressure, but the books are just as interested in the politics and mistrust behind the front lines. Aravon leads a specially trained force that operates more like commandos than line infantry, so the action often turns on raids, infiltration, scouting, and desperate defensive stands rather than one endless battlefield charge.
That gives the series a strong band-of-brothers feel. Aravon's officers and soldiers matter, and the books spend time on loyalty, friction, and the way military units become families under pressure. Even when the plot widens into spies, hidden enemies, and missions deep in hostile territory, the emotional spine stays with the people in the unit.
If you like tactical fantasy, harsh campaigns, and stories where courage is measured one ugly decision at a time, this is a strong fit. Start with Shields in Shadow and expect grit, discipline, and a lot of hard-earned forward movement.
