by Shelly Laurenston

Series background & context

The Scarred Earth Saga takes the energy of GA Aiken’s dragon books and pours it into a new world of blacksmiths, war monks, centaurs, and feuding royal families. Instead of dragon clans, the central conflict revolves around a prophecy that a queen will rise after the old king dies, and the brutal fight among sisters over which one it will be.

In The Blacksmith Queen, Keeley Smythe just wants to run her forge, care for her family, and sell weapons to whoever pays on time. When word spreads that the prophesied queen will come from a farmhouse, the king’s sons begin slaughtering their way across the countryside. Keeley learns that her younger sister Beatrix may be the chosen one, and she throws herself into protecting her family. A clan of mountain warriors who happen to be centaurs arrives to help, including the gruff Caid, who respects Keeley’s strength more than any royal title.

The Princess Knight shifts the focus to Gemma, Keeley’s sister who was once a devoted war monk. She broke with her order to stand with the family, only to discover that the monks are now backing Beatrix instead. Gemma has to navigate old loyalties and new alliances while working with Quinn, the infuriating and irresistible centaur warrior who keeps turning up at her side. Their journey takes them through cursed lands, political traps, and the kind of pitched battles that can only happen when gods are watching.

In The Heretic Royal, quieter sister Ainsley moves to the forefront. Everyone assumes she is harmless, but she has strong opinions about who should wear the crown and a talent for seeing how the pieces on the board fit together. Gruffyn of the Torn Moon Clan, a centaur who would rather avoid humans entirely, finds himself drawn into her plans. Together they work with battle nuns, stubborn monks, and a dragon queen from another land to keep Beatrix from seizing absolute power.

Across the trilogy, Aiken balances bloody warfare with family comedy. The Smythe siblings bicker even when the fate of the kingdom is on the line. Centaurs argue over herd politics. Gods interfere out of boredom as much as malice. Readers who like their fantasy big, weird, and deeply invested in sisters choosing each other over conquest will find plenty to enjoy here.
