The Mane Event

by Shelly Laurenston

Series background & context

The Pride books are the loud, sprawling heart of Shelly Laurenston’s shifterverse. Built around lions, wolves, bears, wild dogs, and the occasional honey badger, the series takes the pack dynamics established in Magnus Pack and explodes them into a larger world that ranges from New York City to Tennessee and beyond.

It begins with The Mane Event, which actually contains two stories. In the first, NYPD cop Dez MacDermot reconnects with her childhood friend Mace Llewellyn, only to discover he is now a lion shifter with a predatory interest in her. Their reunion pulls Dez into the wider shifter community and sets up many of the families and alliances that will matter later. The second story, Shaw’s Tail, pairs hotel owner and lion Brendon Shaw with wolf Ronnie Lee Reed, bringing in the extended Smith pack.

The Beast in Him follows Jessica Ward, once the bullied odd kid and now a successful pack leader in her own right, as she collides again with Bobby Ray Smith. Old crushes, new power dynamics, and a threat to Jess’s pack force them to work together. The Mane Attraction puts undercover lion cop Mitch on the run after an assassination attempt, with wolf Sissy Mae Smith as his chaotic bodyguard and unwanted houseguest back in her Tennessee hometown.

With The Mane Squeeze, hybrid big cat Gwen O’Neill and grizzly Lachlan MacRyrie deal with prejudice against mixed shifters and a threat aimed directly at Gwen. Beast Behaving Badly pairs roller derby playing wolfdog Blayne Thorpe with Bo Novikov, a terrifyingly focused polar bear lion hybrid whose idea of romance looks a lot like stalking and risk assessments. Big Bad Beast finally gives lethal wolf Dee Ann Smith and scheming wolf Ric Van Holtz their turn, tying their romance to an investigation into brutal hybrid fighting rings.

Later entries like Bear Meets Girl, Wolf with Benefits, Bite Me, and the prequel style novella Like a Wolf with a Bone add more branches to the family tree. Hockey leagues, security firms, and extended clans of honey badgers come into play. Characters from earlier books cameo constantly, so that by the time you reach the final volumes it can feel like attending a very rowdy family reunion.

Underneath the jokes and the over the top violence, the series keeps circling themes of loyalty, chosen family, and what it means to make a life when your instincts push you toward bite first, talk later. You can dip into individual books for a particular couple, but the full effect comes from reading in order and watching this community grow.
