Series background & context

The Call of Crows books move Shelly Laurenston’s trademark chaos into a Norse myth flavored urban fantasy. Instead of packs and prides, the core group here is a house full of resurrected warrior women who serve the goddess Skuld in modern day Los Angeles.

In The Unleashing, Kera Watson is a former Marine working a dead end job at a coffee shop when she is stabbed to death in an alley. A Viking regular at the shop begs Skuld to save her, and Kera wakes up in the Birdhouse, the Los Angeles home of the Crows. She now has wings, enhanced strength, and a new mission fighting for the gods. The problem is that the Crows operate more like a chaotic sorority than a military unit, and Kera craves structure. Her guide to this new life is Vig Rundstrom, a quiet, heavily tattooed Raven blacksmith who has been half in love with her for months.

The Undoing follows Jace Berisha, the most introverted of the Crows, whose abusive ex husband literally killed her before Skuld gave her a second chance. Jace would rather read than talk, but a vengeful ancient goddess intent on ending the world pulls her into the orbit of Ski Eriksen, a Protector who loves books as much as she does. While other clans argue and posture, Jace and Ski work together to translate old texts, navigate inter clan politics, and stop a looming apocalypse.

In The Unyielding, Erin Amsel, a Crow who delights in annoying everyone around her, is forced to team up with Stieg Engstrom, an endlessly angry Raven, to undertake a near suicidal mission into the Norse underworld. Their journey pits them against gods, giants, and their own worst instincts, all while the human world hangs in the balance.

What makes this series stand out is its focus on female friendship and the idea of second chances. Most Crows had hard, often violent first lives. In their second lives they are messy, hilarious, and deeply loyal, building a new kind of family even as they tussle with Vikings and deities. The romances are important, but the story never forgets that the Crows themselves are the real love story.

For readers who like mythology mixed with modern settings, sharp humor, and big battles, Call of Crows offers a self contained trilogy that still connects back to Laurenston’s larger universe through tone and attitude.
