The Rules of Time Travel Books in Order

The Rules of Time Travel is a Scottish time-travel romance trilogy set in the same broad world as Diana Knightley's Kaitlyn and Magnus novels. It follows Nor, a young duke from seventeenth-century Scotland, and Livvy, a modern Florida meteorologist whose work brings her close to a strange repeating storm.

Nor investigates a mysterious gale in a Scottish forest. Livvy is looking into a storm that keeps returning in her own time. At the center of both events is a strange piece of technology, and when they touch it, the two are pulled through time. Their first lesson is simple: active portals are dangerous.

Simple rules become much harder when love is involved.

Nor is used to duty, rank, and a life shaped by the expectations of his family and estate. Livvy is practical, observant, and focused on getting home, but she is suddenly stranded in a world whose customs and dangers are far outside anything she expected. They have to rely on each other before they have any real reason to trust one another.

The trilogy follows their effort to understand the portals, the storms, and the consequences of moving between centuries. In The Second Rule of Time Travel: It's Not for the Timid, the couple is separated by time and each must work out how to reach the other. The Third Rule of Time Travel continues their attempts to keep events from spiraling further out of control as other characters and connections from the larger Knightley world enter the picture.

The series combines a fish-out-of-water romance with action, humor, sword fights, and the puzzle of how a time-travel system works. Nor and Livvy are both capable, but their strengths come from very different lives. That contrast gives the books much of their energy, especially when one of them knows the historical setting and the other understands the technology and weather surrounding the portals.

Readers can enjoy the trilogy without first reading Kaitlyn and the Highlander, though the shared world adds extra context.
