Series background & context

Luna's Story is Diana Knightley's three-book romantic survival series, set in a world where rising water, violent weather, and social collapse have changed everyday life. The trilogy follows Luna and Beckett as they try to stay alive long enough to find safety, answers, and a future together.

The first book, Leveling, introduces a flooded landscape and an isolated military outpost. Beckett is waiting there when Luna arrives in an unexpected way, bringing trouble, mystery, and a reason for him to care again. Their meeting is not easy or calm. The world around them is unstable, supplies and shelter matter, and Luna is carrying painful secrets she is not ready to share.

Water is everywhere, and time is running out.

As the series continues through Under and Deep, the crisis grows more personal. Luna and Beckett must navigate the dangers of a damaged world while learning whether they can truly depend on one another. The external threats include worsening storms, dangerous travel, and the uncertainty of what remains beyond the next stretch of water. The emotional tension comes from fear, grief, and the things both characters keep hidden to survive.

Beckett is shaped by military service and by the need to protect the people around him. Luna is resilient, private, and determined not to be defined by what has happened to her. Their relationship develops in the middle of pressure rather than apart from it. They are not given much space to sort out their feelings, so every choice can carry consequences.

The setting gives the trilogy a more post-apocalyptic feel than Knightley's Scottish time-travel books. Instead of castles and portals, readers get outposts, ruined routes, flooded homes, and a society struggling to hold together. Even so, the series shares familiar Knightley themes: love under strain, found family, survival, and two people refusing to let a dangerous world decide who they can become.

The tone is romantic suspense with a survival edge. The books are designed as one continuing story, so begin with Leveling, then read Under and Deep in order. Each installment pushes Luna and Beckett further into the consequences of their changing world and asks what they are willing to risk for a life together.
