That mix of politics and seduction gives the books more motion than a standard ballroom romance. There are secret agendas, rescues, kidnappings, and awkward moral choices, but the tone stays lively. These are not bleak books. The heroes may be bruised, cynical, and a little too practiced at looking amused, yet the series keeps nudging them back toward decency.
