Author bio
Connie Mason built her career on historical romance that moves fast and feels big. Her books travel all over the map, from wagon trails and pirate ships to Scottish castles, colonial outposts, and the Australian frontier. She wrote more than fifty novels and novellas, and readers who enjoy older historical romance often come to her for high emotion, dangerous settings, and stories that never sit still.
Before her first novel was published in 1984, Mason was a full-time homemaker. She was also an avid reader, and writing had long been one of the dreams she kept in the background of daily life. That first published book was Tender Fury, and it opened the door to a long run of romances that mixed love stories with travel, peril, and adventure.
Travel mattered.
Mason spent years living in Europe and Asia as the wife of a career serviceman, and that sense of distance and discovery shows up again and again in her fiction. Even when a book is set in the American West, there is often a feeling that the world is wider, stranger, and more unpredictable than the characters first imagine. Her stories like to push people out of safe rooms and into rough country.
Her backlist is broad, but a few titles give a good feel for the range. Bold Land, Bold Love and Beyond the Horizon lean into frontier hardship, migration, and survival. Taken by You heads to the high seas for a darker pirate romance. A Taste of Sin brings in Scottish passion and family tension. The Dragon Lord turns to medieval romance, with forced marriage, deception, and clashing wills. Later, she also teamed up with Mia Marlowe on the Regency series that begins with Waking Up with a Rake.
What links these books is not one setting, but one style of storytelling. Mason liked strong-minded heroines, dangerous heroes, outlaw reputations, mistaken identities, kidnappings, forced marriages, revenge plots, and lovers who have to work their way toward trust. There is usually action around the romance, not just conversation in drawing rooms. Even the quieter books tend to have an undercurrent of risk.
She kept going.
Romance readers and industry insiders noticed. Romantic Times named her Story Teller of the Year in 1990, and she later received a Career Achievement Award in the Western category in 1994. In 1995 she was featured on 48 Hours in a program about the romance industry, which says something about both her visibility and the moment historical romance was having.
The personal details that come through are pleasantly unshowy. Mason has spoken about loving travel, reading, dancing, playing bridge, and freshwater fishing. She also clearly enjoyed talking about her family, especially her three children and nine grandchildren, and about the memories she carried from those years abroad.
She has made her home in Tarpon Springs, Florida. By the time readers find one Connie Mason book, they usually discover a whole shelf behind it, full of privateers, scouts, lairds, outlaws, and stubborn women who are every bit as hard to forget as the men who fall for them.
