Series background & context
The Rite trilogy drops you back into the secret world of The Society, but this time through the eyes of Mercedes De La Rosa and Judge Montgomery. It is a continuation of the IVI universe introduced in Requiem of the Soul, yet it stands as its own story about inheritance, punishment, and a woman who refuses to break.
Mercedes has grown up knowing exactly what her bloodline means. As a De La Rosa daughter, her future was never really hers. The Rite is the ceremony that will cement her role and tie her fate to the men who control The Society. She dreams of escape, of a life where she is not a pawn, but one mistake makes that dream even more impossible.
Judge is a Sovereign Son, powerful inside IVI and deeply loyal to Mercedes’s brother. To the outside world he is controlled and cold, a man who understands the rules and enforces them. When Mercedes becomes his responsibility, what should have been a calculated alliance turns into a private war. His Rule sets that dynamic in motion, throwing them together in a forced proximity arrangement that neither of them can walk away from.
In Her Rebellion, the balance of power shifts. Mercedes pushes back against the chains The Society has wrapped around her, and against Judge himself. The trilogy leans hard into the idea that rebellion always has a cost, and that sometimes the most dangerous thing you can do is fall in love with the person who holds your leash.
Their Reign closes the arc with external threats closing in, old secrets coming to light, and both Mercedes and Judge having to decide what they are willing to sacrifice to protect each other. The politics of IVI come to the forefront, but the emotional core stays with a couple who started as enemies and end up something much more complicated.
Readers who enjoyed the power games and ritual of The Society Trilogy will find familiar symbols and side characters here, but The Rite is very much Mercedes and Judge’s story. Expect a possessive hero, a heroine who refuses to stay small, and a world where every promise carries fine print written in blood.
