Author bio

A. Zavarelli writes dark and contemporary romance, often placing attraction inside a situation that is already dangerous or unequal. Mafia loyalties, revenge, wealth and concealed motives recur across her books. Her characters may want protection, freedom or justice, but the person who seems able to provide it can also be the source of their greatest uncertainty.

Her public biography describes a life in the Northwest with her partner and pets. She also names unusual, unsettling documentaries as something she watches for research. She keeps the personal details brief, while her fiction gives a much fuller picture of the conflicts that interest her: people who are drawn together while having good reasons to distrust each other.

Trust is rarely simple in her stories.

The Boston Underworld books offer one route into that approach. In Crow, a woman takes a job in the club of Irish mafia figure Lachlan Crow with a purpose she cannot openly explain. Neither trusts the other, and their growing attraction threatens the boundaries of her plan. The setting makes the romantic conflict part of a larger world of criminal power, where discovering the truth about someone's intentions can have consequences beyond a broken relationship.

Reaper approaches that world through Sasha and a man whose silence and violence make him difficult to understand. They share a secret, and his desire to keep her safe sits beside the threat he believes he poses himself. The book concentrates on a different couple while preserving connections to the earlier story. The six Boston Underworld novels have individual romantic plots and recurring characters, so reading from the beginning lets those crossovers accumulate without making every volume another stage of the same courtship.

Her books also make use of arrangements in which one person has something the other desperately needs. The Bleeding Hearts duet begins with Echo, where a woman's wish to help her imprisoned brother places her under the control of a man with his own revenge in mind. The premise gives the relationship an imbalance from the start, and turns questions about choice and motive into part of the ongoing romantic tension.

Attraction can make a plan harder to carry out.

Zavarelli has also reworked a familiar fairy tale in Stealing Cinderella. A woman's intention to meet a prince at a ball and gain support for a charity becomes a darker encounter than she expected. The recognizable starting point gives readers a frame for the story, while the danger around the prince changes the meaning of finding him. It is another example of her interest in a hoped-for opportunity becoming something much more complicated.

Across these different settings, her fiction uses secrets, possessiveness and competing loyalties to keep relationships under pressure. Readers looking for linked mafia romances can begin with Boston Underworld, while a duet offers a longer conflict spread across two books. Her public record includes appearances on the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. The consistent thread is an interest in what happens when strong attraction develops before honesty, safety or equal footing can be taken for granted.
