Collateral

by Natasha Knight

2019

On her sixteenth birthday, Gabriela meets Stefan Sabbioni in the dark of her bedroom and receives a blood crusted necklace as a warning. Two years later he returns to collect, taking her as collateral in a ruthless vendetta against her father.

Series background & context

The Collateral Damage duet is Natasha Knight’s take on an arranged marriage born purely out of vengeance. Across Collateral and Damage, Gabriela Marchese and Stefan Sabbioni are dragged into a war between families where love was never part of the plan.

In Collateral, Gabriela is the sheltered daughter of a powerful man, used to living under heavy guard and even heavier expectations. On her sixteenth birthday, a stranger steps out of the shadows in her bedroom, smelling of whiskey and death, and wraps a blood crusted necklace around her throat as a message to her father. Two years later that message comes due. Stefan returns, no longer hiding in the dark, to take the "something precious" he promised to claim: Gabriela herself.

Stefan has every intention of using her to break Marchese. He is cold, strategic, and focused entirely on revenge. Taking his enemy’s daughter as his bride is the first move in a longer game that will burn alliances to the ground. The first book leans into the fear and fascination Gabriela feels around the man who has upended her life, and the ways Stefan’s carefully maintained detachment starts to crack when he actually has to live with the woman he turned into collateral.

Damage continues their story as the marriage of convenience becomes much more complicated. Old enemies close ranks, and Gabriela discovers that the sins of her father reach further than she ever knew. Stefan has to decide whether she is just a means to an end or someone he is willing to bleed for in her own right.

What sets this duet apart is the mix of sweeping mafia politics and very intimate, domestic scenes between two people learning each other’s triggers, vulnerabilities, and desires. You will find kidnapping, forced proximity, and plenty of moral gray areas, but also quiet kitchen moments and dawning trust.

Collateral Damage sits alongside the Benedetti and Augustine worlds, echoing their themes of inherited guilt and dangerous devotion while standing firmly on its own. If you like your arranged marriage romances high on tension, with a hero who has to be dragged inch by inch toward tenderness, this is a natural place to dive in.
