The Rise of the Aztecs Books in Order

The Rise of the Aztecs is a seven-book series about the shifting alliances, rival cities, and political struggles that help shape the future of the Aztec world. It starts with The Highlander, following Kuini, a boy from the highlands who expects a straightforward life of hunting, fighting, and defending his people from lowland raids.

Then he befriends the first son of the emperor of Texcoco.

The friendship begins in secret and seems harmless, but Kuini's first visit to the wealthy lowland capital exposes him to a larger and more dangerous world. Old conflicts between highlanders and lowlanders do not vanish because two boys get along. Kuini also discovers that his own family history holds secrets with consequences far beyond his village.

In Crossing Worlds, Texcoco falls to its enemies, and Kuini helps his highborn friend, the heir to the throne, flee to the mountains. The escape puts Kuini's family at risk and makes the series' central concern clear: friendships are meaningful, but politics can turn them into liabilities. Every community has its own fears, grudges, and reasons to distrust outsiders.

The books then move deeper into the rivalries of Texcoco, Tenochtitlan, and the Tepanec Empire. The Emperor's Second Wife finds Kuini and Coyotl in the Aztec capital as influential people grow uneasy about Tepanec control. Currents of War jumps forward to a moment when the Aztecs are preparing to revolt. Kuini has become a leader, but his involvement in imperial politics may cost more than he expects.

The later novels broaden the cast and the stakes. The Fall of the Empire follows trader Etl and the determined Tlalli as rebellion reaches the Tepanec capital. The Sword moves to reconquered Texcoco, where a stolen ceremonial weapon sparks a crisis during preparations for an emperor's ascent. The Triple Alliance brings ballgames, twins, reforms, and political intrigue into a capital that is trying to become something larger than an ordinary city-state.

This is a series about a changing region, not a simple march toward victory. Characters are often caught between loyalty to home and the pull of the wider world.
