Author bio

Zoe Saadia writes historical fiction set in the Americas before European contact, with stories that move from the Mexican Valley and its growing city-states to the Great Lakes and the Ohio River country.

Her work began with a long-running interest in the people and cultures of pre-contact America. She has described that interest as something that stayed with her for years before she knew how she wanted to use it.

Research became the way in. Saadia has said she spent close to two decades reading primary sources and scholarly interpretations, then building fictional stories around major historical events, cultural practices, political struggles, and everyday lives. She has also explained that she does not come from an archaeology background, but consults specialists when a subject calls for it.

The result is a body of novels that treats early North and Mesoamerican history as a place for character-driven adventure, not as a distant footnote. Her characters are often young people, outsiders, ambitious warriors, reluctant leaders, or ordinary people caught near the center of larger changes.

Her Mesoamerican books include At Road's End, The Young Jaguar, and The Jaguar Warrior, which follow Tepanec warriors and the early Aztec world when Tenochtitlan was still a smaller power. Family loyalty, political succession, military duty, and the cost of ambition keep the action moving.

In The Highlander, Crossing Worlds, and the later Rise of the Aztecs novels, Saadia follows Kuini and other characters through the conflicts that reshape the Mexican Valley. These books lean into friendships tested by old rivalries, court politics, trade, war, and the hard work of building influence.

The Aztec Chronicles begins with Obsidian Puma, where a village boy named Miztli is sent to Tenochtitlan to learn a craft and lands in the middle of city trouble. It is a useful example of Saadia's approach: a large political story seen through people who are young, curious, imperfect, and very much in over their heads.

Her North American fiction takes a different route. Two Rivers, Across the Great Sparkling Water, and the People of the Longhouse books explore the founding traditions and later pressures surrounding the Great League of the Iroquois. Negotiation matters as much as fighting, though danger is never far away.

Saadia also turns to the Mississippi and Ohio River regions in the Mound Builders novels, beginning with Shadow on the Sun. Across all these series, readers can expect active plots, rival communities, personal loyalties, and a steady interest in the people living through history while it is still unfinished.
