Series background & context
The Rise of Sigurd trilogy returns to the Viking world but steps back a generation, telling the origin story of Sigurd Haraldarson and the fellowship that later links to the Raven books. Set mainly in Norway around the year 785, these novels tap more directly into Norse myth while still keeping one foot in the mud and salt of everyday life.
In God of Vengeance, a young Sigurd survives when King Gorm betrays and butchers his father's household. Stripped of family, land and status, he is left with only a handful of loyal companions and a burning oath to make the king pay in blood. Much of the book focuses on how he wins allies such as Olaf, Bram the Bear, Black Floki and the shield maiden Valgerd, and how he learns to use cunning and spectacle as weapons alongside axe and spear.
Winter's Fire shows Sigurd biding his time. He knows he cannot yet face King Gorm head on, so he leads his small band across the sea to fight as mercenaries in Sweden. There, amid sieges, betrayals and a brush with ritual sacrifice, Sigurd begins to understand the price of fame and what it means to be the man others look to when the shield wall starts to buckle.
In Wings of the Storm, the stakes finally rise to match his ambition. Captured and taken in chains toward the sacred temple at Ubsola, Sigurd seizes the chance to steal a legendary spear associated with Odin and use it as a rallying point for a much larger war band. The path back to Norway and a reckoning with King Gorm is lined with storms, blood feuds and desperate gambles.
Across the trilogy, the gods are always hovering at the edge of the campfire. Omens, dreams and rituals thread through the story, but the books never lose sight of how cold steel, wits and loyalty decide whether men live or die. The result is a saga that feels slightly more mythic and sweeping than Raven while keeping the same focus on fellowship and fate.
If you are drawn to Viking stories that mix revenge, exploration and the sense of a young leader growing into his legend, The Rise of Sigurd offers a complete arc from disaster to hard won victory, with plenty of roaring battles along the way.
