by Giles Kristian

2018

Series background & context

The Arthurian Tales books reimagine one of Britain's best known myth cycles in a grounded, late Roman and early medieval setting. Rather than telling the story from Arthur's throne, they move in close on characters who stand slightly to the side of the legend, asking what it would really feel like to live under the long shadow of Camelot.

Lancelot is both coming of age story and tragic confession. It follows a refugee boy cast out by war who grows up under the eyes of Merlin and Nimue, trains as a warrior on a remote isle and eventually rides beside Arthur himself. The novel stays inside Lancelot's head as he falls for Guinevere and tries to balance love, loyalty and the brutal realities of holding a fragile kingdom together.

In Camelot, the focus shifts to Galahad, Lancelot's son, who begins the book as a sheltered novice in a marshland monastery. Drawn into the world beyond by the fierce, damaged Iselle and an aging Gawain, he is forced to confront the ruins left after Arthur's fall. Their journey to seek the last druid and a cauldron with old magic is as much about finding a reason to hope as it is about relics and battles.

Arthur brings the cycle to a close in a Britain where Saxon warlords have taken much of the land and Arthur exists mostly in song. Beran, a weary mercenary with plenty of blood on his hands, is ordered to kill a royal child who might one day unite the country. Instead he chooses to defy those orders and escort the boy toward the last flickering light of Camelot, pursued by enemies both human and otherworldly.

Across the trilogy the familiar names are there, from Morgana and Merlin to Tristan and Isolde, but the tone is more mud, smoke and worn mail than shining plate and easy prophecy. Battles are messy, victories feel costly, and magic is slippery, half memory and half the desperation of people who need to believe in something larger than themselves.

For readers, these books offer a long, richly told journey through love, betrayal, faith and the stubborn idea that a better kind of Britain once existed and might, in some small way, be rebuilt. You do not need to be an Arthurian expert to follow them, only to enjoy stories where legend and hard history rub up against each other.
