Series background & context
The Reluctant Brides series is built around people who do not come to love cleanly or easily. Each book gives its couple a reason to resist the match: revenge, reputation, a wounded past, a bad marriage, or a danger that makes trust feel foolish. The title fits because Busbee’s brides are often boxed in by society, family, and circumstance before they are ready to admit what they want.
The series opens with A Heart For The Taking, set in Colonial Virginia. Chance Walker still blames his cousin Jonathan for his wife’s death, and when Jonathan returns from England with widowed Lady Fancy Merrivale, Chance sees a chance for revenge. The plan is ugly. The feelings are not.
That is classic Busbee territory.
Fancy is a fish out of water in Virginia, caught between family secrets, inheritance trouble, and the dangerous feud inside the Walker family. The romance with Chance begins with suspicion and spite, but it becomes harder for either of them to treat the other as a pawn once real danger enters the story.
Swear by the Moon moves to London and gives the series a darker social edge. Thea Garrett is rich, beautiful, and damaged by scandal. Patrick Blackburne has wounds of his own and a reputation that does not make him an obvious safe choice. Their attraction is tangled up with blackmail and murder, which means the romance has to develop while both characters are trying not to be ruined.
While Passion Sleeps is older in publication date but often grouped as the third Reluctant Brides book. It follows Beth Ridgeway and Rafael Santana, who meet again in New Orleans with years of misunderstanding between them. Beth is married, Rafael is proud and suspicious, and their attraction is framed as forbidden, difficult, and hard to ignore.
Read this series for old-school historical romance with high emotions, proud lovers, and external danger pushing private feelings into the open. A Heart For The Taking is the best place to begin if you want the series order. If you prefer New Orleans drama and a more intense forbidden-love setup, While Passion Sleeps gives a good sense of Busbee’s earlier style.
