The Reluctant King
by K'wan Foye
2021
The King family looks like political royalty, with a councilman father and mansion in New Jersey, but their real power comes from a criminal “Monarchy” in Five Points. On the day of a lavish birthday party, secrets, rivals, and their reluctant son Shadow threaten to topple it all.
Series background & context
The Reluctant King series shifts K’wan’s focus from hustlers on the corner to a family that has turned street power into political capital. It is about what happens when a crime dynasty tries to polish its image without cleaning up what lies underneath.
At the center is the King family, based in an upscale New Jersey suburb but rooted in New York City’s Five Points neighborhood. In The Reluctant King, Chancellor “Chance” King is both a sitting councilman and the quiet ruler of a criminal “Monarchy” that has controlled territory and business for generations. His wife, Maureen, moves comfortably as a socialite, while their three children—Ghost, Lolli, and Shadow—each represent a different response to the family legacy.
Ghost is the heir apparent on the street side, a violent enforcer who enjoys the fear he inspires. Lolli is sharp, ambitious, and tired of being treated as background; she wants her role in the empire acknowledged. Shadow, the youngest, is the outlier. He would rather chase women and hang out in the old neighborhood than take meetings about money and power. To him, the “crown” feels more like a trap than a prize.
The novel takes place largely over the course of a single day as the Kings prepare for Maureen’s birthday party, an event Chancellor plans to use as the launchpad for his run at borough president. That tight timeframe gives the book a charged, almost theatrical feel. As family tensions simmer and outside enemies make moves, everything that has been hidden under polite smiles and tailored suits begins to surface.
Shadow’s arc is the emotional spine of the story. As events push him out of his comfort zone, he has to grapple with what it actually means to carry the King name. Is it possible to stand apart from a legacy built on extortion, bribery, and murder, or does blood loyalty win out every time? The book does not offer easy answers.
The follow-up, False Idols: A Reluctant King Novel, shows what happens when that carefully built structure cracks. After Chancellor is arrested and Ghost is murdered, the Monarchy is thrown into chaos. The throne of Five Points is suddenly empty, and power-hungry relatives and lieutenants race to fill the vacuum. Chancellor’s older brother Chapman seizes the moment, proclaiming himself the new king and exiling Maureen and Shadow from the inner circle.
Stripped of money and status, Maureen and Shadow are forced back into the kind of life they thought they had left behind. From the outside, it looks like a fall. Inside, it is an opportunity to see who they are without the safety net of the Monarchy. Shadow is given a near-impossible charge: take back what was stolen and restore their line.
These books carry the emotional weight of a family drama and the pacing of a thriller. Boardroom scenes matter just as much as street confrontations. Readers watch corrupt deals play out in campaign offices and at backyard parties as often as in alleys. The Reluctant King series is a strong choice for anyone who enjoys stories about dynasties, succession fights, and the thin wall between legitimate power and the people willing to kill to keep it.
