The Queen's Rising

by Rebecca Ross

2018

When Brienna arrives at Magnalia House to study one of five passions, she hopes only to master a craft and earn a patron. Instead she discovers dangerous ancestral memories that tie her to Maevana's lost queens and a rebellion to reclaim a stolen crown.

Series background & context

The Queen's Rising duology introduces a world split between two neighboring kingdoms, the cultured Valenia in the south and the wilder, magic touched Maevana in the north. A generation ago Maevana's line of warrior queens was overthrown, its queen's magic stolen and the throne seized by a brutal king. That history hangs over everything, even in distant libraries and schools.

At the center is Brienna, a girl of mixed heritage who has never quite belonged. Raised by her grandfather in Valenia, she is taken to Magnalia House, an elite school where a small group of students study one of five passions: art, music, dramatics, wit, or knowledge. Most girls show clear talent for a single path. Brienna cycles through them all, never exceptional, until she finally settles on knowledge under the guidance of the reserved Master Cartier.

Training at Magnalia is about more than academics. Each student hopes to be chosen by a patron at the summer solstice and step into a life shaped by her passion. When that day comes, Brienna's worst fear comes true. She is left without a patron and, she believes, without a future. Months later, a disgraced lord offers her a position in his household, and the story opens up into something larger than classroom rivalries.

Brienna soon learns that her invitation has everything to do with who she is and where she comes from. Through inherited memories and a deepening sense of loyalty, she is drawn into a rebellion aimed at toppling Maevana's usurper king and restoring a rightful queen. The Queen's Rising follows her as she chooses between the safe, narrow life she has been offered and the risky path of claiming her bloodline, her magic, and her own voice.

The Queen's Resistance takes place after the rebellion, when the harder work of rebuilding begins. With Maevana's crown back on a queen's head, Brienna and Cartier find themselves in new roles, surrounded by nobles who are not all pleased with the shift in power. Old secrets surface, conspiracies simmer, and the characters have to learn what resistance looks like when the enemy is not always wearing an obvious crown.

Together, the two books blend court intrigue, mentorship, slow burn romance, and questions about chosen family. Ross spends time on intimate relationships between Brienna and her fellow students, her complicated bond with Cartier, and the way loyalty can pull in different directions when history, magic, and politics collide.

Readers who like character driven YA fantasy with a strong sense of place will find this duology a cozy place to settle in. It is less about shocking twists and more about watching a young woman grow into her power while helping an entire kingdom remember what it means to be ruled by a queen.
