Series background & context
The Kronos Rising books are big, bloody creature thrillers built around a simple bad idea: what if prehistoric marine predators never really disappeared? Max Hawthorne drops those animals into the modern world and follows the people left trying to survive the result. Expect ocean attacks, scientific mysteries, military hardware, personal grudges, and creatures that are far too large to ignore.
The series begins with Kronos Rising in Paradise Cove, Florida. Sheriff Jake Braddock has returned to his hometown after personal loss, hoping for a quieter life. Instead, unexplained disappearances and a mutilated whale carcass point to something massive in the water. Marine biologist Amara Takagi becomes a key ally as the town faces a predator believed extinct.
The first book works as a coastal survival thriller, but it also lays down questions that keep growing. Who or what allowed such a creature to survive? What happens when people with money, power, or an agenda get involved? And can an animal this dangerous be understood, contained, or stopped?
Diablo steps back to the hidden volcanic caldera connected to the predators' origin, while Plague bridges the early story to the larger war that follows. It introduces another danger carried by the creatures, an ancient pathogen that makes the threat more than a matter of teeth and size.
Then Kraken, Volume One jumps ahead thirty years. The focus shifts to brothers Garm and Dirk Braddock, who fight the expanding pliosaur crisis from very different places. Garm commands the anti-biologic submarine Gryphon, while Dirk works at Tartarus, a secret research facility studying the predators and the damage they have done to the world.
This is where the series becomes much bigger.
Kraken, Volume Two and Kraken, Volume Three push the action into submarine missions, dangerous research, Diablo Caldera, and the depths around Tartarus. The tone stays pulpy and high-stakes, with momentum, monster encounters, and cliffhanger-style pressure taking priority over quiet detective work. Start with Kronos Rising for the clearest introduction, then move through the connected novellas and Kraken volumes to watch the threat spread from one Florida community to the wider world.
