Series background & context

The Letters of Enchantment books are rooted in the idea that words can change the world, especially when they travel in unexpected ways. Set in a world that feels a little like early twentieth century Europe, the series follows journalists, soldiers, and even gods as they fight a war that is as emotional as it is physical.

Two ancient deities, sky goddess Enva and under realm god Dacre, have awakened after centuries of uneasy sleep. Their conflict spills into human nations, turning cities like Oath and towns along the western front into battlefields. Magic is threaded through everyday life in quiet ways: enchanted typewriters, wardrobes that deliver letters, myths that hint at forgotten history. Ross uses these touches to connect intimate correspondence with large scale conflict.

In Divine Rivals, young reporters Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt start out as rivals at the Oath Gazette. Iris is trying to hold her fragile family together after her brother goes missing at the front and her mother sinks into addiction. Late at night she types letters to her brother on an heirloom Alouette typewriter and slips them under her wardrobe door. Instead of reaching the trenches, the letters appear in Roman's room. He writes back anonymously, and the pair form a deep bond on the page long before Iris knows who is on the other end.

As Iris and Roman take jobs as war correspondents, their anonymous connection follows them to the front. They report on gas attacks, propaganda, and the way ordinary people try to keep living while gods tear up the sky. The romance is tender and slow building, set against scenes of real loss and bravery. Ruthless Vows continues the story after a devastating battle, with Roman trapped in Dacre's realm and stripped of his memories while Iris returns home scarred but determined to expose the truth about the war. Both of them are pulled between personal safety and the responsibility that comes with knowing what the gods are planning.

Wild Reverence steps back in time about six hundred years to an era when the gods still walk openly between realms. The book follows Matilda, a young goddess with messenger magic, and Vincent, a mortal lord bound to a river. Their relationship grows from childhood dreams to a complicated, adult bond as they navigate court rivalries, divine politics, and the bloody traditions of their world. The story fills in the history behind the enchanted typewriters and deepens the mythology that sits under Iris and Roman's war.

Across the series, Ross blends romance with questions about faith, memory, and who gets to tell the story of a war. The letters themselves become a kind of magic, creating private spaces where characters can be honest even when they are surrounded by censorship or danger. Readers get both the rush of secret messages and the slower ache of watching people grow up in the shadow of conflict.

If you enjoy historical feeling fantasy, rival to lovers dynamics, and stories where writing is literally powerful, Letters of Enchantment offers a rich, emotional ride. Each book can stand on its own arc, but read together they form a layered portrait of love, loss, and the ripples a single letter can send through time.
