The Princess Protection Program Books in Order

The Princess Protection Program asks a very good question: what if the people inside fairy tales do not want the endings assigned to them? Alex London takes that idea and turns it into a funny, quick-moving middle grade fantasy about princesses who run from their stories instead of waiting patiently inside them.

The entry point is Rosamund, a Sleeping Beauty figure who is not thrilled by the idea of waking up to a stranger's kiss. When she flees, she finds the Home Educational Academy, or the HEA, a school in the real world where runaway fairy-tale royals can hide from cursed spindles, forced marriages, frog princes, and all the other things their stories call destiny. The setup is playful, but it is doing real work from the start. London is clearly interested in what happens when a character gets to say no.

Friendship matters more than the tiara.

Rosamund quickly meets other escapees, including Rana, Sirena, Cindy, Charlie, and more students trying to figure out who they are outside the roles written for them. That gives the series a mix of school story, fairy-tale remix, and mystery. The academy promises safety, but Rosamund starts noticing cracks. Former students are strangely hard to remember. Graduation is suspiciously vague. The headmistress may not be nearly as kind as she seems.

The second book, After Ever After, shifts more attention to Rana, who already has plenty of reasons to avoid anything involving frog princes. Of course, fairy tales are terrible at respecting boundaries. When frog princes start multiplying and a shadowy monster begins erasing fairy-tale characters altogether, the series expands beyond school secrets into a larger fight over stories, survival, and who gets to choose an ending.

What makes these books work is the balance. They are funny and self-aware, but they are not just jokes about old tales. London uses the fairy-tale structure to explore identity, fear, friendship, and the pressure of being told what kind of person you are supposed to be. The real world and the Once Upon Time world both matter, and the back-and-forth between them keeps the series lively.

If you want middle grade fantasy that feels modern without losing the charm of castles, curses, and storybook logic, this is an easy series to recommend. Expect fast chapters, familiar tale pieces used in new ways, and a cast of kids trying to write lives that actually belong to them.
