Series background & context
Task Force takes The Precinct into a more specialized, more mobile part of the job. These books still belong to Miller's Kansas City police world, but the cases often feel broader, faster, and a little more military in flavor. That fits the heroes, several of whom are connected to the armed forces, K-9 work, or high-risk assignments.
The run includes The Marine Next Door, Kansas City Cowboy, Tactical Advantage, Assumed Identity, Task Force Bride, and Yuletide Protector. The stories move through witness protection, fake engagements, hidden identities, and dangerous cases that spill over into homes, ranches, and holiday gatherings. Miller keeps the suspense active, but she also gives these books a stronger recovery theme than some earlier Precinct entries.
A lot of the leads here are people who are already disciplined and mission-focused. The challenge is not whether they can do the job. It is whether they can let someone else close while they do it. That gives the romance a nice push-pull feeling, especially when a case requires close quarters or a fake relationship.
If you want Julie Miller with task-force energy, military-adjacent heroes, and a strong protective streak, this spin-off is a good place to settle in for a few books.
