Series background & context
The Outlanders takes place in the same ruined future as Deathlands, about a century further on. Two hundred years after the nuclear catastrophe, nine barons have imposed a new political order. Their fortified cities possess recovered technology, while people beyond the walls struggle in the Outlands. The apparent stability rests on strict control, secrecy and the punishment of anyone who questions authority. The series follows people who uncover enough of that hidden system to become its enemies, then decide to fight for humanity's freedom.
Kane and Grant begin as Magistrates, enforcers of Cobaltville's laws. Archivist Brigid Baptiste helps investigate technology that does not fit the official account of their world. Their inquiry puts them on the wrong side of the regime they have served. Stripped of their place in the city, they enter the Outlands and begin learning what the barons have concealed. Their backgrounds matter because they understand the machinery of rule, but must now use that knowledge against their former masters.
Exile opens a much larger world.
The rebels operate from Cerberus Redoubt, a hidden military installation with resources left by the civilization destroyed in the holocaust. Kane, Grant, Brigid and the wasteland survivor Domi become central members of a resistance whose missions reach well beyond the surrounding countryside. Matter-transfer gateways allow them to cross great distances, while other discoveries take them through time and into alternate realities. Each journey creates opportunities to uncover secrets, but also exposes the team to threats that cannot be understood through ordinary military experience alone.
The connecting struggle concerns the forces behind Earth's rulers. Alien powers have manipulated humanity across long stretches of history, leaving traces in ancient cultures as well as advanced technology. As the rebels learn more, their task expands from opposing particular barons to resisting those who treat the entire planet as property. Rivalries among the alien powers complicate that fight. A temporary alliance may offer the only way forward, yet an enemy's help can come with motives just as dangerous as the immediate threat.
The series combines postapocalyptic action with alien conspiracy, lost civilizations and journeys across dimensions. Exile to Hell introduces the break with the baronial order and is the starting point for the main characters' story. Later adventures turn places such as deserts, underground cities and old laboratories into parts of a wider conflict over human independence. The scale becomes enormous, but the team's purpose stays recognizable: discover what has been hidden, keep one another alive and prevent stronger beings from deciding humanity's future for it.
