Agent in Berlin
by Alex Gerlis
2021
On the eve of war, spymaster Barnaby Allen assembles a covert network inside Germany, from a Berlin socialite to an American sports reporter and an SS officer’s disillusioned wife. As the Wolf Pack uncovers plans for a new fighter plane and a Japanese strike on the United States, its members must decide how much they are willing to risk for information.
Series background & context
The Wolf Pack Spies books follow a loose network of agents that British spymaster Barnaby Allen builds inside Nazi Germany and occupied Europe as war closes in. Rather than one lone hero, the series tracks a shifting pack of sources, couriers and embedded insiders whose loyalties are always being tested.
In Agent in Berlin the story begins in the late 1930s, with Allen quietly recruiting people who can move through Berlin without drawing attention. A horse-mad German with friends in the underground scene, a young American sports journalist, a Luftwaffe officer, a Japanese diplomat and even an SS officer’s wife all become part of a fragile new network. Their job is to uncover German military projects and, crucially, to warn London about a daring plan by Japan to strike at the United States.
Agent in Peril shifts the focus east to occupied Poland and the Warsaw Ghetto. There, scientist Roman Loszynski has developed a device that could make Allied bombing far more accurate, if only he and his work can be smuggled out. British agent Jack Miller, now based in Switzerland, and undercover aristocrat Sophia von Naundorf are pulled back toward the heart of the Reich to locate Loszynski, test his invention and get everyone to safety before the Gestapo closes in.
By Agent in the Shadows the action has moved to Lyon in 1943, at a moment when the French Resistance is trying to unite under Charles de Gaulle’s leadership. A secret meeting of resistance leaders is brutally raided by Klaus Barbie, the so-called Butcher of Lyon, and it is clear that someone has betrayed them. Jack and Sophia are sent into the city to trace the leak, rescue what remains of the movement and work out who, among many frightened and compromised people, can still be trusted.
Across the trilogy, Gerlis uses real events—bombing campaigns over the Ruhr, the destruction of Jewish communities, the politics of the Free French—as a backdrop rather than a history lesson. The books move quickly between briefings in London, cramped safe houses, crowded cafés and railway platforms where a small delay can mean the difference between escape and arrest. The sense that any conversation might be overheard never really goes away.
Taken together, the Wolf Pack novels offer a picture of espionage built on teamwork and compromise, where bravery is often quiet and loyalty is never simple. They are a good fit if you enjoy World War II spy stories that balance action with the constant unease of not knowing who, if anyone, you should believe.
