The Order of the Seven Stars Books in Order

The Order of the Seven Stars books are Smith's darkest series so far. Set around World War I, they combine battlefield history, occult danger, and the kind of magic that feels both wondrous and deeply unsettling. These are books about haunted places, secret organizations, and people trying to stay human while the world around them tears itself apart.

The central character is Petra Kurková, a Prague woman who has spent much of her life living smaller than her gifts. In The Witch's Lens, while her husband is away at the eastern front, Petra discovers that her camera can capture the souls of the dead on film. That strange talent draws the attention of Josef Svoboda and pulls her into the orbit of the Order of the Seven Stars, an ancient group that tries to keep balance between worlds.

The war makes every choice harder.

From there the series moves toward the front lines and into the Carpathians, where the dead refuse to stay quiet and the supernatural threat is never far from the ordinary brutality of the conflict. Petra joins a rough team of magic users, each with their own strengths, secrets, and reasons for mistrust. Smith gets a lot of tension out of that setup. No one is fully comfortable, everyone is carrying private damage, and the mission itself keeps asking for more than any of them are prepared to give.

In The Wolf's Eye, the emotional stakes rise because the group has become something like a found family. A wolf curse threatens one of their own, and Petra refuses to accept the easy answer of sacrifice. Her growing bond with Josef, her need to understand her own history, and the Order's stern sense of duty pull against each other in ways that keep the second book tense even when the action slows down.

These novels are not cozy fantasies dressed in period clothes. They are grim at times, especially in the way they connect supernatural horror to the very real horrors of war. But Petra gives the story its heart. She is practical, frightened, stubborn, curious, and increasingly unwilling to let anyone else define the limits of her magic.

Read the two books in order. The second grows directly out of the first, both in plot and in feeling. If you like wartime fantasy, undead threats, werewolf curses, and heroines who become stronger under impossible pressure, this is a very solid place to start with Smith.
