These are foggier, darker stories than the Vine Witch books, with more emphasis on murder, missing memories, uneasy alliances, and the hidden networks of magic running under ordinary city life.

At the center is Edwina Blackwood, a witch trying to hold together a precarious life with her sister Mary. The two run a curiosity shop and scrape by as best they can, but their bond is complicated long before the plot starts moving. In The Raven Spell, private detective Ian Cameron turns up half-dead on a riverbank, stripped of his memory and carrying clues that point straight toward the Blackwood sisters.

That first book works like an occult mystery. Edwina and Ian follow clues through river mud, East End streets, music halls, and safe houses, while the case begins to link murders, disappearances, and dangerous magical practices. But the real tension sits inside the family story. Mary has her own secrets, Edwina has spent years trying to protect her, and every new revelation forces Edwina to ask where loyalty ends and self-preservation begins.

The Raven Song builds directly on that damage. Edwina leaves London under pressure, with grief behind her and a stalker close on her heels, only to find that distance does not make the danger smaller. The world opens up to include fair folk, prophecy, and a thinner veil between the mortal world and the Otherworld, but the books never stop feeling personal. Edwina is still trying to understand her family, her own power, and what sort of future she can claim for herself.

These novels are a good fit if you like your historical fantasy with a detective spine. The magic is there, but so are clues, suspects, bad decisions, and the constant sense that one wrong step will expose the whole hidden world. There is romance, but it grows out of investigation and shared risk rather than taking over the story.

Read the duology in order. The second book lands best if you already know the fractures between Edwina, Mary, and Ian, because the series is really about more than who committed which crime. It is about what people do with fear, grief, family debt, and the dangerous truths they have been avoiding for years.
