Christmas at the Restaurant

by Pamela M Kelley

2020

During Nantucket's festive Christmas Stroll, Mimi's Place prepares for its busiest season yet. Newly single Mandy, happily-in-love Emma and Paul, practical Jill, and bartender Gina juggle family, new romances, and restaurant pressures against a sparkling holiday backdrop.

Series background & context

The Nantucket Restaurant series centers on three sisters who inherit far more than they expected when their grandmother passes away. Mandy, Jill, and Emma O'Toole grew up on Nantucket but now live very different lives spread across the country. Mandy stayed on the island, married her high school sweetheart, and raised a family. Jill built a high powered career in Manhattan, and Emma teaches school in Arizona while nurturing her interest in photography.

When their grandmother Ethel dies, the sisters return to Nantucket for the funeral and learn that she was the silent owner of Mimi's Place, one of the island's most beloved restaurants. In a surprise twist, she leaves the restaurant to all three of them, along with Paul, the long time chef who once broke Emma's heart. There is a catch: before they can sell or make any big decisions, the sisters must each work in the restaurant for a year.

That condition forces them to reorder their lives. Mandy has to confront cracks in what looked like a perfect marriage. Jill must juggle her thriving business with extended time away from her city life. Emma has to face old feelings for Paul while deciding what she really wants from her future. The restaurant itself needs attention, from finances to decor, and serves as a hub where island locals, tourists, and family drama all collide.

The follow up, Christmas at the Nantucket Restaurant, takes place during the island's famous Christmas Stroll and shows Mimi's Place in full holiday mode. Mandy is newly divorced and cautiously dating, Emma and Paul are navigating their first Christmas together, Jill and her new husband are splitting time between Manhattan and Nantucket, and bartender Gina finds her quiet first winter on the island unexpectedly busy when two very different men show interest.

Food is central to the series, from menu planning and kitchen prep to the comfort of a familiar meal shared with family. At the same time, the books are about reinvention and forgiveness, as each sister decides what she wants her life to look like now that duty, marriage, and geography feel more flexible.

Readers who enjoy family sagas with strong sister dynamics, a vivid island setting, and plenty of behind the scenes restaurant detail will find this series an inviting place to linger.
