The Fifth Avenue Apartment

by Pamela M Kelley

2023

Newly laid-off Sophie jumps at the chance to live with her ninety-something great-aunt in a coveted Fifth Avenue apartment. Temp jobs lead her into high-end real estate, new friendships, and a slow-burn connection with charming neighbor Max next door.

Series background & context

The Fifth Avenue Apartment stories follow Sophie, a thirty year old woman who has always dreamed of living in New York City but never quite managed to make it work. When she is laid off from a stressful job at a law firm, she receives an unexpected invitation from her ninety two year old great aunt to come stay for a while in her grand Fifth Avenue apartment.

Moving into the apartment gives Sophie not only a spectacular address but also a chance to step off the career treadmill and figure out what she actually wants. She begins temping in different offices around the city to sample new industries and eventually lands at a luxury real estate firm. There she discovers she has a knack for connecting with clients and an eye for properties, even as she hesitates to trade a steady paycheck for a commission based role.

Life at the apartment brings its own pleasures and complications. Sophie's aunt gently nudges her toward the charming next door neighbor, Max, who is dating a supermodel when the book begins and therefore safely filed under "friend" in Sophie's mind. As they share small moments in the hallway, at dinner, and around the building, that safe category starts to feel less certain.

Sophie also forms close friendships with roommates and coworkers, building a found family of people who are all chasing their own New York dreams. The novel explores questions of risk and security, reinvention in one's thirties, and how much of our identity comes from the work we do versus the people we choose to keep close.

The short follow up story is meant to be read after the novel. It checks in on Sophie, Max, and their circle sometime later, offering a cozy glimpse of how their careers and relationships have evolved. Together, the book and its bonus story create a satisfying arc for readers who enjoy city set women's fiction with a romantic thread, aspirational details, and an emphasis on supportive friendship.
